Taking Laravel Across the Pond: The Artisan of the Day Is Bill Mitchell.
For Bill Mitchell, Laravel has been a constant through career changes, continents, and creative projects.
“I still remember watching some of Jeffrey Way’s tutorials, back before Laracasts even existed. I was already a PHP developer at the time, but Laravel was new to me. Once I started following those tutorials, everything just clicked.”
That “click” marked the beginning of a decade-long journey with Laravel and building projects on both sides of the pond.
Laravel for Quality Management
Bill works at Isolocity, a company that develops quality management software to help businesses stay compliant and organized. He applies years of Laravel experience to build large, production-grade systems that support critical workflows and help companies meet strict regulatory standards.
“It’s a great environment where I get to apply my Laravel experience on large systems that make a real difference for the businesses using them,” he explains.
His professional bond with Laravel began in the early 2010s, when Bill was working as a PHP developer in Canada but wanted to land a job where he could develop full-time with Laravel. At the same time, he and his partner had another shared goal: to live overseas before settling down. “We sold almost everything we owned, quit our jobs, and moved to Scotland.”
Shortly after arriving, he interviewed with a company that used Laravel on the backend. Within weeks, he had achieved both dreams: working professionally with Laravel and living abroad.
Side Project Spotlight: RadioPuppy
Bill’s latest project, RadioPuppy, combines his love for music and coding into something he hopes “others will enjoy too.” Built with Laravel 12, InertiaJS, and React, it allows users to search, play, and favorite online streaming radio stations. For Bill, the ability to build a love project so quickly is exactly what drew him into the Laravel ecosystem: “Laravel felt intuitive, clean, and fun to work with, and I immediately saw how quickly I could build things with it.”
